Ebony looked in the mirror. She did this often, just gazing at the reflection staring back at her as if in amazement or deep thought. She sought out every blemish, every mark on her skin with her eyes and even to this day, years after she acquired her skill of shapeshifting, she was still amazed. Amazed because the face that stared back at her wasn't scarred, unlike the face that used to look back at her for years. She did the very same thing before but instead of amazement, a number of other emotions overcame her. Sadness, upset, regret, hopelessness, disgust. But in this new face she saw light, hope, happiness, life. When Ebony discovered her power, it didn't just change her life like many of her peers, it gave her one. Everyday she was thankful for what she had, she tried never to take life for granted and everyday she was happy and had a warm smile on her face. Though of course there was always that worry people would find out the truth and how what she saw in the mirror was all just a big lie. Ebony had always been self conscious, she truly cared about what others thought of her, although she often liked to think she didn't, but she did. She couldn't bear it if people knew the truth. Showing her scarred face again was one of her ultimate fears, even the sight scared her and not once had she changed back to what she once looked like, not even in private.
Ebony gave a thankful sigh and turned away, thanking whatever higher power existed for giving her this second chance. She would've liked to have believed in god but she just didn't know, so when she said a grateful thank you she never knew who she was saying it to, but at least whoever it was knew and would know for every single day that Ebony lived and breathed on this earth.
It was early morning but Ebony had always been an early riser. There was nothing better than morning; the promise of a new day, full of possibilities. Ebony didn't have any classes until later so she was unsure of what to do with herself, usually she would've gone in search of friends or new people to mingle with, she had always been the sociable type, but not today. For some reason she felt herself drawn from the grounds and in need of some quiet time, not necessarily to herself but not in the big crowds she was usually within. Sometimes she'd escape to them, especially in times of loneliness, but Ebony knew only too well that a room full of people could make you feel even more lonelier. Instead she fancied the wooded meadow, it was a peaceful place and Ebony was feeling inspired. After grabbing a pen and her note pad she was out the door and heading towards the grounds.
The sun was blazing today, not a cloud in the sky. Ebony knew people may be heading to the park or towards other parts of the grounds but not her. Usually she would be out with them, soaking up the sun but instead she found herself in the wooded meadow, where the sun merely broke through small cracks in the trees creating a mixture of light and shadow across the ground. It was both an interesting and beautiful sight and Ebony took a seat on a large rock in the sunlight, taking note of her surroundings in her pad. Maybe it'd end up in that amazing novel she had always wanted to write. Not that she had even started, right now she only had a collection of bits and pieces of stories and a little poetry. But she wanted to be a writer and one day she would be. That is, if all this anti-mutant stuff went away, it worried her a lot but it wasn't something she liked to think about. Anything that invaded her happiness was unwanted and not worth thinking about. Ebony wanted to be always happy, always having a good time but what she hadn't yet realised was that trying too hard can take the good thing out of anything. But still, she preferred being ignorant, even if most of the time that just meant lying to herself.
Scribbling away in her pad, Ebony took down descriptions, ideas that sprung into her head. Anything that she thought she might be able to use or manipulate into a story. Ebony loved being creative and it was easy when there was no one around or no disturbances, not that taking herself away from these things was usual. It was strange for Ebony, to be away from the crowds and she was starting to feel the silence now. She disliked silence. But after a few moments, that was disturbed... She could hear someone approaching.
